Zone 2 Training – Does It Actually Make You Leaner?
There's a lot of talk about Zone 2 training and its benefits for fat loss. But if you do 60 minutes every day, will you actually become leaner?
Yes, potentially. But it's not quite as simple as burning fat to lose fat.
Burning Fat Isn't the Same as Losing Body Fat
During Zone 2 exercise, your body uses a relatively high proportion of fat for fuel. As exercise intensity increases, you rely more heavily on carbohydrates.
This is where the confusion starts.
People often assume that because they're burning more fat during exercise, they must be losing more body fat.
But that's not necessarily true. Burning more fat during exercise doesn't automatically mean you'll lose more body fat over time.
The key is understanding the difference between fat burned during exercise and body fat lost over time.
Let’s compare two workouts.
Why?
During Zone 2, your body uses a relatively high proportion of fat for energy.
During higher-intensity exercise, it relies more heavily on carbohydrate.
But your body continuously adjusts which fuels it uses throughout the day.
Burning more fat during a workout doesn't automatically mean losing more stored body fat over 24 hours.
If both workouts expend 400 calories, and food intake and other activity remain comparable, their contribution to fat loss will generally be similar.
So Why Recommend Zone 2?
Because it has other advantages:
Easier to sustain for longer periods.
Less fatiguing than hard intervals.
Supports aerobic fitness and mitochondrial adaptations.
Easier to recover from alongside resistance training.
Can increase weekly calorie expenditure without excessive training stress.
My Coaching Takeaway
For someone wanting to become leaner, I'd prioritise:
Calorie balance + resistance training + adequate protein + sustainable cardio.
Zone 2 is an excellent tool, but it isn't a special fat-loss zone.
And here's an important distinction: 60 minutes of Zone 2 may actually be more useful for fat loss than 20 minutes of HIIT simply because someone can sustain more total weekly energy expenditure with it.
That's where its real value lies.
